وقتی کالای خارجی گران‌تر می‌شود (به‌خاطر تعرفه)، مردم بیشتر به خرید محصول داخلی تمایل پیدا می‌کنند.
تعرفه ابزاریه برای مدیریت میزان واردات و جلوگیری از خروج زیاد ارز.
دولت ها از تعرفه، مثل مالیات درآمد کسب می کنند.
گاهی تعرفه ها به دلایل غیراقتصادی مثل فشار سیاسی بر کشور صادرکننده هم اعمال می شود.
